pura vida

To be able to share my images with you means more to me that you will ever know.

Pure Vida "pure life" ; to live a peaceful, simple, uncluttered life with deep appreciation of nature, family and friends; a "real living" that reflects happiness, well-being and satisfaction.  My photography is a way to capture those moments of Pure Vida in the best way I can, with images that remind myself that I am enough.  By surrounding myself with people that I love and by being present and mindful of my purpose gives me hope that I am closer to living Pure Vida.

I realized at a very young age that I would rather be behind the camera than in front!

I use the Olympus TG-5 with an underwater housing.  You can dive  50 feet without the extra housing, if you would like to save money.  Although I discovered when diving with a guide or dive master you always tend to go past the max depth for the basic camera.   The other consideration is that the housing also protects the camera lens.  The housing costs the same as the camera except you cannot replace the lens on the camera.

Discovered quite quickly that I never take my wide angle lens off the housing.  It is a must have addition to your under water experience.  You can get up close but at the same time fit the entire fish.

There is a lot of debate of what equipment you should order and when.  Depends on available funds and the kind of diving.  Ensure when you order your equipment do not forget to order the correct fiber optic cable.

Olympus TG -5 Underwater Housing PT-059
Backscatter Wide Angle Lens - M52 (lens built to fit the Olympus Housing)
Sea & Sea Strobe YS-D2J
Flexitray to attach the Strobe to the housing
Safety strap - connecting the housing to your person and the strobe to your housing.

you don't take a photo, you make it ~ Ansel Adams

I have a basic Nikon D5100 with a Nikon 18-106 mm lens.

When I travel I end up taking both the Olympus and Nikon.  The Olympus is a great travel sized camera but when you use the zoom I don't like the quality or picture I end up with.

The only modifications I potentially edit on my images are the lighting, contrast and if necessary crop.  I have the mad skills to Photoshop the heck out of my photos but I don't, I do take 100's of the same location to get the perfect moment captured!!

lap top et cetera

This might be obvious to most, but just in case I always take the following on any trip:
  • laptop to upload the numerous images, allows me to clearly see the images to ensure that I am not dealing with technical issues especially on the underwater photos.  I post images to Facebook and Instagram so I need a way to transfer the images from the memory card to online.
  • extra batteries  for the Olympus TG-5.  when you use the flash and zoom on the camera you end up using a lot of the battery.  After each dive I charge the battery and replace with a fresh battery.  This prevents me from having to try and change on the boat.  (I still take an extra battery with me on the boat!)
  • extra SD card for both cameras, this is just in case you end up with errors or a damaged card.  Depending on your destination you might not be able to find a replacement . (I also take an extra card on the boat!)
  • Flash Drive, for extra caution I take a few so that I can copy ALL of my photos as a back up and in case my laptop runs out of memory (happens ALL the time!)  I don't travel thousands of miles to lose my photos.
